Our days are marked with incidents; some escape our attention while a few leave their imprint and stick. In a series of 3 such quick happenings, I begin with one of them though not the first occurrence.
Chance meeting, round the bend kinds are truly exhilarating. And if such bumping into each other happens with many years having flown past, they become even more memorable. Lot of catching up to do. Great strides taken in the years that separate the last happenstance and this one! By each part. Hence a lot of excited talk during this coming across so and so session! The world around becomes non-existent. Whom did I meet? What if I share that it was a student! Greater excitement from this ex-teacher’s end. Why? For having been recognised, sought and spoken to with fond remembrances of the past. What else? Good stuff, laughter, pleasant exchanges pan out. When you glance at your watch, time has moved on though it stalled and rolled back in those precious re-living moments when a student from long years ago seeks her teacher during her evening stroll.
This happenstance with an ex student, whom I had last seen nearly a decade ago, was a shot in the arm. From a distance I could see a youthful stride headed in my direction, but folks walk all the time specially during the evenings. However, this gait was purposeful and familiar. And when its voice sought me out, by my name, in a place we had shifted a while ago, but still seemed a stranger to, I felt good. No. It was more. Simply brilliant to re- connect with this lissome lady, as stalky as ever and perhaps a few inches taller too. When I taught her, she was in Grade 10 and now she had the Master’s Degree under her belt. Phew! Time races, rather whizzes and pages in the book of life flip at a frenetic pace, leaving behind what had happened, in the dusty haze of yesteryears. However, the past does catch up. It does. In a good sort of a way. As it did in these beautiful moments of rediscovering the classes I had given, the other students and what they are currently doing and so on. The warm evening had turned pleasant as an ex-teacher, used to talking and exchanging thoughts, I rose out of my self-imposed ignominy to feel much-loved and remembered.
My joy knew no bounds when I learnt that the young achiever, lives in the vicinity, neighbourhood and all these months we hadn’t bumped into each other, ever! It had to be that day, err.. that evening, when my heart wished to reach out, to reconnect with someone who knew me, understood me and wouldn’t really mind chatting with me, just the way we did in the classroom days!
3 cheers to life’s wonderful surprises, the treasures that lay hidden and surface right at the moment you wish to unearth them! Thank you, dear Shreya, for bumping into me!
